Fishing in Northwest Montana is arguably the country's most picturesque and beautiful fish I have ever experienced. Oh, and the trout is as good as anywhere I've ever fished with one exception of Alaska, but it is probably Alaska in a class by itself. Northwest Montana offers some fantastic fishing. I grew up in central Pennsylvania and started a lot of trout there, but the trout fishing in Pennsylvania can not hold a candlenorth-Montana. And the landscape, but beautiful in central Pennsylvania, is much more majestic in northwest Montana as well.

My biggest surprise came in the way of fishing pressure. I think I would have expected a big difference between PA and MT, but it is dramatic. In comparison, the amount of fishermen in the water, much less seen in the West. The other big surprise is the fact that 80 are trapped at home and 90% of trout in northwest Montana. II remember, once again impressed in the PA, if we have a fish caught locally. Here in northwest Montana, nearly every fish is native. That's nice, too. For those of you who do not know, trout are much more beautiful than a trout provided. So, if you like trout, Montana is right for you.

Not only the majority of trout are large enough e. Eighteen inches of fish are relatively common and many are caught, are greater than the previous. The hardest thing there is to teach a bass angler learning to splitshot is detecting the bite. The bite will vary according to the activity level of the fish. There will be times when they pop the bait hard and you will know immediately that they are eating the bait. Other times there will be a soft, almost imperceptible tick and then nothing. And finally there is the dreaded pressure bite. The pressure bite will take two forms.

The first way to describe a pressure bite is you will feel a slight resistance to pulling your line forward. This is somewhat like hooking a soft, spongy rubber band. The second pressure bite is when you lose contact with the bottom.

A bass has picked up your lure and is just following along with your forward movement. This is why it is so important to maintain bottom contact. Once you realize that you've lost the feel of the weight against the bottom, and your depth hasn't changed significantly, you have to put two and two together and get ready to set the hook.

The preferred hook set for this technique is called a sweep set. Once you have detected a fish holding your bait drop the rod tip towards the fish, reel down to the point of feeling resistance (or just shy of that point) and 'sweep' the rod horizontally away from the fish.

If the rod loads up good and you're sure that you've got the hook in the fish just fight him to the boat. If you set the hook and it didn't feel solid you may want to set the hook a second time. The drag on your reel should be set tight enough that it doesn't give on the initial hook set. But it shouldn't be set so tight that a larger fish can't take the line if needed.

At this time of year, many anglers turn their attention to fishing, not only fishing, but trout fishing. Many of these same anglers consider simply tying on a size 4 hook, 'threading' I live worm onto that hook, and casting it out into the water to be trout fishing. While this might be technically true, in reality this is far from fishing. In my favorite movie, A River Runs Through It, the reverend McLain is quoted as saying, "Anyone who does not know how to catch a fish should not be able to disgrace a fish by catching it". He was referring to flea flicking, a practice I abhor, but the sentiment is nonetheless true. Many anglers should not be allowed to disgrace trout by catching them in the aforementioned manner. Below, I'm going to reveal some very effective trout fishing techniques so that you can stop disgracing these beautiful fish.

Natural Presentation - One of the best trout fishing techniques is to present your bait in the most natural way possible. Just for your information, the most natural way possible is not "threading" a worm onto a hook or creating what I like to call a "worm ball" by hooking a worm onto a hook over and over again. The most natural way to present live bait (especially worms) is through the use of gang hooks. Gang hooks are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem, thus enabling the angler to present live worms in an outstretched and natural manner. The best way to achieve a natural presentation is through the use of gang hooks.

Efficient Bait Transportation - This may sound strange, but trout cannot be caught without your line being in the water. The more time that can be spent with your line in the water the more trout that will be caught, it's as simple as that. A great way to spend more time with your line in the water is employing a bait bag to carry your bait. This way you're not fumbling around looking for your bait, it's right there at your fingertips, ready to be used. The use of a bait bag saves a ton of time and enables you to spend more time with your line in the water.

Watch Your Shadow - Trout are a very skittish fish. If they detect your shadow, they won't bite. Especially large trout. Sure small, inexperienced trout may still bite, but large ones will not if they detect a shadow, which of course means something foreign in their environment. Pay attention to your shadow being cast on the water and you will catch more trout.

Smell Matters - Trout have a very sensitive sense of smell. They can smell foreign substances on baits, and if they do, they are much less apt to bite. I remedy this problem by rubbing a clump of grass or handful of dirt in my hands before fishing and periodically during the day. Doing this will help you catch more trout. Again, this isn't such a big deal with small, inexperienced trout, but it is with larger fish.

These simple techniques will help you catch more trout, which is what we're all looking for, right? Remember nothing increases your catch rates like practice. The better angler you become, the more fish you will catch. At the end of the day fishing isn't rocket science, it's just fishing after all.

How to untangle fishing line - and our lives

When I was a girl, well before the spin-cast type fishing reels, we had to deal with basket-type roles. Instead of free line, which would be the end of Part spining as it is now, relax mechanically, a very inefficient for casting bait, but even for fly fishing. To get the cart before the stop line, we humans learned fishing out shopping, our thumbs up, so that the line does not slow downentangled.

Drag in the process of learning to perform these maneuvers, but sometimes we would not pull hard enough, especially when we tried to continue the line, as surely we should cast and the result would be above ground line tangles when the basket rotates faster than the line. Large "nests" of fishing line suddenly swell right before our eyes, and it would be almost impossible to disentangle.

I was not rich and do not afford the luxury ofFlushing tangled mess and my new line, so I had to stand there patiently, sometimes for hours to untangle my line - a welcome change for the poor fish!

When I reflect on this experience in childhood, where I see my life is very similar to the line spool of fishing. Until I decided to throw a line to happen, without wires, but of course every fish they want for nothing ! And if I have my line carefully, with the right pressure, prove too much or too fast,sometimes I'm sure it is. Of course, the fish is always desirable, "far" and is tempted to take the risk and go for it! But if my line is confusing, because the pressure was not enough) on the role (in fact, to prevent them from running too fast before my line (ambition), I have ruined my day of fishing, or maybe my life!

Trout can be a very challenging species of fish to "fool", especially when you're dealing with native trout, as opposed to stocked trout.

Everyone knows what a stocked trout is, and all of us have fished for them. Stocked trout aren't very difficult to "fool", mostly because they were raised in a glorified fish tank. A trout that was born in a particular body of water, or has lived in a particular body of water for a few years, is a different story. These fish are what I refer to as "native" trout. These trout are much more leery of human beings and anything unnatural.

The techniques outlined in this article are effective for any trout, native or stocked; I just want everyone to understand the difference. Stocked trout can be considered "dumb" and sometimes give trout fishing a bad name. In any case these techniques are amazingly effective and will help you be a much more successful trout angler. Keep in mind; it's a good idea when trout fishing to simply treat every situation as if you're fishing for native trout.

Let's begin with your hands. Trout have a very sensitive sense of smell, and can detect unnatural odors very easily. For this reason, we always want to make sure that our hands are free of any unnatural odors that might be present, such as gasoline residue (from filling up your car). The best way to make sure that your hands are free from any unnatural odors is to grab a handful of grass or dirt and rub it into your hands before baiting up. This will eliminate ant unnatural odors that might be present.

Another effective technique is to pay attention to the weather and moon. What do I mean by this? Simply that you should know how the weather and moon affect the trout, and use this information to your advantage. Don't worry you don't have to become a meteorologist or astrologer either. The basic rules about how the weather and moon impact fishing will suffice. Being on the water when these to factors are in your favor is probably the most important "technique" that there is.

What about the way in which your bait is presented? Do you present your bait in the most effective way possible, or do you just put your bait on a hook and hope for the best? When trout fishing your bait should always be presented in a natural manner and this means using gang hooks. Gang hooks enable live bait to be presented in a completely natural manner, especially if you use live worms as bait. Trout fishing and pre-tied gang hooks go together like a hand and a glove.

Start using these techniques sooner, rather than later, and you will almost immediately begin catching more trout. How am I so sure of this? Because I've personally been using these techniques for more that 20 years and know how effective they are.

A completely distinct, and very ancient way of angling for hooking trout and other kinds of fish, such as bass or salmon. Angling itself means simply fishing with a hook to catch fish in the simplest form. And, in case you don't know, you can use a fish worm, midnight crawler, lizard, chad, grasshopper, minnows, gizzard, liver, and many other forms of bait that will work great.

If you don't want to touch and use live creatures or portions of them, you can buy artificial flies or bait made by man to look like a real fishworm, but made out of man-made material. I've heard of many weird baits being used throughout my fishing years. Some say their baits are so good, that when they dangle them out over the water or stream that the fish can't resist jumping up and hooking themselves. You decide whether to believe them or not.

Now, if you already know all that I have shared with you above, but not much more, then this next part is for you.

First, you'll need a rod and reel, one that will catch fish, big or little, and that personally suits you. The rod you chose will depend on whether you're male or female, a young boy or girl, or if perhaps you have some years built up to deserve the honor of being called a senior citizen. Weight is a factor to consider, as well as make and color.

Betta fish, also known as Betta Splendens, Beta Fish and Siamese Fighting Fish, famous animals are not expensive and can be very beautiful. Technically, the name refers Betta about fifty species, but is commonly used as if only Betta splendens is meant. The largest are only about three centimeters in order. Although there are many stories of surviving fish in tanks with very small, experts, a three-liter tank, recommended for best results, and there is a dispute about how small aTank is really still acceptable. Betta fish are native to low-water of oxygen, and usually do not need ventilation. They are tropical fish, and are best kept warm, though. Some owners claim that their Bettas act happier with a system of air filter, even if you do not need the fish to survive. Bettas normally live two or three years, but also of conditions, some lived up to ten.

Betta fish are native to Thailand and Cambodia. The common name comesthe name of Siam, now Thailand, lead, and the territorial battles of the males. How many members of the animal kingdom are looking for the more colorful the males to attract females more. Women tend to seem pretty boring, and almost all male Betta fish are sold for this reason. In the wild are dull green and brown, but the farmers have brought much more fantastic color combinations.

Some believe that Bettas can be kept with other fish. This is not true.Multiple male Bettas is a precondition for battle. Bettas with other fish around will still display and flare their fins, but won’t see this as a mortal insult. They should not be kept in a tank with fish that are aggressive or that nip fins, and only one male should be present. Female Bettas can usually play well with others, and there are cages to be used to separate male Bettas if they are kept in the same tank. These should prevent the fish from seeing each other.

Betta Fish can handle a surprising range of water conditions, but the water should be changed once a week or so, more often if the fish is kept in a small container. They can be fed once a day, or twice if you desire, and aren’t especially fussy about their food. There is specially formulated Betta food on the market. In the wild, Bettas eat live food, insects and their larvae, and like it in fish tanks, but they will eat flakes and frozen food as well. Do not overfeed as this will require cleaning the Tank more often. When you change the water, remember to let the water sit for a day before it can evaporate into the bath with the fish on chlorine. A good choice for food Betta is artemia, daphnia, plankton, Tubifex, glass worms, beef heart, and can be used, frozen or freeze-dried. Flakes should be supplemented with other foods from the list.

Decorations are important because they hide so the fish places to live, and a layer of gravel to help provide land for growing nitrifiers. Decorations must be smooth and can pull sharp points, fins. The following formula is a well-proven method to very accurately

estimate the weight of most game fish.

The measurements are all in inches and the final result in pounds,

but this can then be transformed into kilograms.

The girth of the fish is measured on the greatest part and then squared.

This number is then multiplied by the body length of the fish,

measured as illustrated below.

This result is then divided by 800 to get the weight in pounds.

Example:

Girth is 3 feet 4 inches = 40 inches

Body length is 8 feet 4 inches = 100 inches

40 x 40 =1600

1600 x 100 = 160000

160000 / 800 = 200 lbs.

To get the result in kilograms, the final number is then divided by 2.2.

Example:

200 / 2.2 = 88 kg.

Trolling live or dead bait with a drop back is successfully used when targeting billfish.

A rubber band is attached to the mainline in the desired distance from the bait.

This rubber band is then attached to the release clip on the outrigger.

From the release clip the mainline hangs loosely in a desired length to the rod tip.

The reel is set with a drag of 25 - 33% of the line's breaking strength.

When the billfish strikes the bait, the rubber band snaps thereby giving the fish

time to turn and swallow the bait before the line is straightened and the hook is set.

Chum is a substance made of small pieces of fish, blood and fish oil,

often used when fishing for sharks while drifting or at anchor.

The purpose of chumming is to attract fish with the smell and to tempt

them to eat. Chum is also used in combination with small pieces of fish.

Sharks react most to the smell, while Dorado and several species of Tuna

react more on the pieces of fish falling through the water layers.

Chum can be prepared from home and frozen in blocks.

These blocks are then put in a semi-submerged net or bucket

with holes, where they slowly dissolve and let out a trail in the water.

If the chum mostly consists of blood and oil a bit of sand

can be mixed with it to bind and make it sink slowly.

The bridle itself is a short length of monofilament line with a sliding noose in each end. Begin by tying a noose on the hook and pulling it up tight using the knot configuration shown here.

	Then tie another sliding noose in the other end of the monofilament, keeping in mind that the bridle needs to be quite short, say 100 mm for towing Skipjack Tuna. Tying bridles of this short length does take a little practice. Close the loop up on your loop gauge or pen, but not so tight that you can't get it off.

Slide the loop off your loop gauge and engage your open-eye live baiting needle.

	When the baitfish comes aboard, the hook is usually cut straight off to save time, and the needle is passed straight through the eye tunnel of the baitfish taking care not to damage the eyes.

Pull the second loop right through and hook it over the point of the hook. Then disengage the loop from the open-eyed needle.

	The bait is placed back in the water and trolled slowly.

Bounce Balling

Bounce balling is a highly effective, yet very simple, fishing method

when fishing over sand or mud bottom for various bottom dwellers.

The technique is essentially a slow trolling technique designed to drag a bait

along the bottom, causing a commotion and thereby provoking a strike.

The rig is made with a three-way swivel tied to the main line.

At the bottom of the three-way swivel, a 25-35 cm. monofilament line

with a 1 to 2 pound cannonball sinker is attached.

Note that the sinker should be attached with a line of slightly lower breaking strength

then the main line, so this line will break off if the sinker becomes snagged.

From the center connection of the swivel, a 1,2 - 1,5 meter

monofilament line with a chrome dodger is attached.

Trailing 25-35 cm. behind this dodger, the lure is attached.

As you drift or slow troll over an area of sand or mud bottom,

you bounce the sinker on the bottom by lifting and dropping the rod tip.

This way the sinker will create a sound, vibrations and clouds of silt

that attracts bottomfeeding predators. As they get closer,

the reflections of the metal dodger also helps trigger the strike.

As you are fishing with such a heavy sinker, it is very difficult to judge

just how hard to strike, so therefore do not try to set the hook.

Wind in the line until you feel the fish and the hook has set itself.

A heavy rod is required to stay in control of the large sinker,

and braided line is also a huge benifit as the low stretch

and increased sensitivity, makes it easier to feel the sinker

bouncing along the bottom.

Blood Worm

Using the Blood Worm technique when fishing, has surprisingly

nothing to do with using a worm as bait.

It is a technique originally invented for Shark fishing by American angler Fred Archer.

It is now used in many fishing venues around the world, including Phuket,

with slight changes depending on the behaviour of the target fish in the area.

The technique is similar to fishing with live fish, trolling or drifting,

with only one exception - the cut of tail of the bait fish!

This might not sound like a drastic change in technique, but it

can mean a big difference in the amount of landed billfish.

On days where the billfish are showing but only as lazy non-feeders,

the trick is to quickly cut off the tail of a baitfish,

avoiding cutting too deep so the fish will start bleeding.

Once in the water, the baitfish will wiggle its now missing tail

in an attempt to swim, and this behaviour

often turns lazy billfish into feeding predators.

Can Fish See Color?

Most scientists think so. Here's how it can work for you. George Poveromo As any angler knows, artificial fishing lures come in a wide range of attractive colors and color combinations. Whether fish actually see color — and, more importantly, whether they react to it — has been an ongoing debate for quite some time. As one major manufacturer of offshore trolling lures once told me in confidence, "You can catch offshore fish on any lure color, since it's the action of the lure that attracts and provokes them into striking — not color." At the opposite end of that spectrum, experts at inshore-lure companies believe fish can indeed distinguish colors. Their philosophy is that if their lures aren't ultra-realistic, they won't fool as many fish. The Science of Vision "A big factor is the color spectrum and what happens when light moves into the ocean," says Dr. Linda Farmer, director of the Undergraduate Program in Marine and Atmospheric Science for the University of Miami. "As light travels through the water, red, which is the longest wavelength, is absorbed first, followed by orange, yellow, green and blue and, eventually, indigo and violet [the shortest wavelength], leaving no sunlight below a certain depth. Red will appear as a faint black. The color violet will remain intact the longest." It should be noted that how far down these colors penetrate varies based on water clarity, the amount of light and other factors. The complexity of vision in fish varies from species to species. Some experts believe that offshore fish such as billfish, tuna, wahoo and dolphin are colorblind and only distinguish objects that contrast with the background they see. These fish are thought to possess two visual pigments, sensitive to blue and yellow light. According to Farmer, some inshore fish have more than two pigments. Fish with four pigments can detect many colors and can distinguish bright and dark objects against any background. Armed with this knowledge, I discussed my approach with some successful anglers. Offshore Evidence "The purple-silver-black combo is the ticket," says Frank Johnson of Mold Craft. "If I had to choose just one lure color for billfish, it would be purple, hands down. We not only sell more lures in this primary color, but we've got guys using it all over the world, and saying it works. There has to be something to it." Dissecting the idea that offshore fish see more shades than colors, it could be argued that purple may indeed offer a sharper contrast against a bright sky or blue ocean. One could also say that the purple hues closely resemble small tunas, on which billfish prey. Could it be the "match the hatch" theory at work? Or are fish more keyed in to the color patterns of their forage, rather than the type of forage? I've long had confidence in trolling lures in colors that mimic the natural forage. My go-to colors are all-blue or blue-white, which I think mimic flying fish. When peanut dolphin are abundant, I'll add a few green-blue-yellow combinations to our spread to imitate dolphin. The Inshore Spectrum Eric Bachnik is chief operating officer of L & S Bait Company in Largo, Florida — makers of MirrOlure — and a light-tackle inshore angler. "Our top-selling MirrOlure pattern for 65 years has been the red head-white body," says Bachnik. "Perhaps it appears like an injured baitfish. That's followed closely by our natural scaled sardine pattern. Of the vast colors and combinations offered by his company, Bachnik believes that in cloudy or tannic waters, fish can see gold and chartreuse patterns better. "In these conditions, fish rely heavily on vibrations," says Bachnik. "On dark nights, I like all-black, black-silver or purple. Even on moonless nights, there will be some light that helps fish see and dial in on the silhouette. On a bright night, I'll choose lures with holographic or mirror inserts." When plugging inshore, I "match the hatch." If there's an abundance of a specific bait, chances are gamefish will be tuned into those colors. I often go with the red head-white body lure if there is a lack of bait. Two things are certain: Gamefish respond to lure color, and we'll still continue to fish our go-to lures. But experimenting with color in the quest to find a knockout lure is a challenge we seem to enjoy.
